ALL THE MAKINGS OF A PICNIC

Surfs up in Dallas! This is just one of the unexpected, artfully designed products that are taking space on the third floor of The Power Station beginning March 4th. The PICNIC Launch and Artist Pop-Up will also include unique goods by artists Soup Ceramics, a collaboration between Summer E. Aquino and Jeff Gibbons, Specific Objects by artist and fabricator Ryan Goolsby, ceramics by Jessica Ninci, photographs by Dan Schmahl, and hand-illustrated garments by Reagan Kendall. The pop-up is surely stacked with great goods by artists in and around Dallas, which will make leaving empty handed a difficult task.

The official launch of PICNIC SURF SHAPES will present a drop of limited-edition offerings, including surfboards by Gregory Ruppe, PICNIC’s first-edition zine, a selection of new limited-edition garments, and a run of collaborative objects between PICNIC and the artists in the curated exhibition. A surf brand, a research lab, and a platform for experimentation and collaboration, PICNIC SURF SHAPES is an artist-led, conceptually rigorous, and ecologically dedicated initiative that produces hand-shaped surfboards, and other unique objects for use both in and out of the water.

If you’re still wondering how a surfing brand came to be in Dallas, PICNIC was founded in early 2020 by artist and shaper Gregory Ruppe and Alden Pinnell founder of The Power Station, a contemporary art space. Every shape is hand built from start to finish and original. Each design is made in-house in small batches with durability, and environmental kindness in mind. So far, PICNIC has boards available in Oceanside, California, Galveston Island, and PICNIC’s Dallas headquarters. The boards are a work of art, even if they don’t see a lick of saltwater, though they can easily ride the waves. Find those waves in Dallas in a few locations such as DFW Surf.

Disappearing Acts, an exhibition presented by PICNIC CURATORIAL PROJECTS will open in the garden annex building of The Power Station on the same evening and feature the artists included in the pop-up. RSVP here.
