Contemporary Art Dealers of Dallas (CADD) and Thomas Maddrey have announced the recipient of the second annual CADD x Maddrey Artist as Dallas artist Angela Faz. Awarded annually by members of the Dallas arts community dedicated to supporting creatives, the award seeks to champion historically under-served and under-represented groups within the city’s arts community.
The 2021 prize was open to BIPOC (Black, indigenous, and people of color) artists living or working in Dallas County. Submitted portfolios were reviewed by an esteemed panel of jurors: Vivian Li, Lupe Murchison Curator of Contemporary Art at the Dallas Museum of Art; Christopher Blay, artist, writer, and chief curator at the Houston Museum of African American Culture; and Angel Cabrales, artist and professor living and working in El Paso, TX.
Faz will receive a $5,000 cash prize as well as a solo exhibition of their artwork to be hosted in 2022. Thomas Maddrey will also provide the recipient with a Legal Mentorship Package worth a total value of more than $4,500. Angela Faz is a multi-disciplinary artist focusing on art interventions and reclamation of public space. Their multi-disciplinary practice confronts social injustice through aesthetic means. Through relief printmaking, projections, mixed media, and installations, Faz discusses Dallas’ history and, most recently, how the body exists in these places with complex histories.
For their most recent exhibition, The Grammar of Animacy, Faz personifies the Arkikosa, also known as the Trinity River. Faz posited the questions, “Who is water? If water could talk, what would they say? If we viewed water as a living relation, how might that change how we steward our most significant natural asset?” The Grammar of Animacy aims to “activate” the river in various physical artworks, performances, tangible facts, and objects. Faz further explains, “The exhibition also looks at how we value natural resources by examining The Gold Standard in proximity to water sampled from Ft. Worth and Dallas. Visitors are also cordially invited to The Gold Standard restaurant to view the market price for gold and water via QR code as an immersive art experience.”
Faz has exhibited at Women & Their Work Gallery in Austin, Texas, Kirk Hopper Fine Art, and at the Rising Star 2018 Showcase at the Turner House. Their print Collective Care is included in the Prints & Photographs Division Online Catalog at the Library of Congress. Currently, they are a Cedars Union Cohort 3 studio artist, and Faz lives in Oak Cliff.
