Art Walk West

This Saturday afternoon, October 21, 2023, West Dallas will once again pulsate with the vibrant colors and innovative spirit of its expansive creative community, as the ninth edition of Art Walk West returns to charm the art enthusiasts from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Established in 2015 by the West Dallas Chamber of Commerce, Art Walk West is a testament to the sprawling community of artists, galleries, and creative spaces that thrives in West Dallas. Nestled beneath the looming Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge, this burgeoning neighborhood stands as a beacon for art lovers, with the Trinity Groves and the emerging Tin District taking center stage.

This year’s event promises an eclectic blend of tradition and novelty. Art Walk West 2023 introduces a self-guided outdoor walking and driving tour, combining the exploration of art with a nod to safety and well-being.

Kicking off from 2715 Bataan Street, attendees can embark on a journey encompassing diverse artistic hubs. From the Tin District’s bustling artist studios to the ArtPark at Trinity Groves, every corner of West Dallas beckons with a unique story to tell. A special highlight will be the 10 freshly painted murals, part of the Wild West Mural Fest, adding a new layer to the city’s artistic tapestry.

For those inclined towards interactive experiences, the AT&T Performing Arts Center and ArtsBridge—Powered by Toyota—are setting up a craft tent at 2715 Bataan Street. The event also boasts participation from some of West Dallas’ most interesting artists and galleries, such as Sweet Pass Sculpture Park, Cluley Projects, Ro2Art, 500x, Daisha Board Gallery, Funky Fun Studios, and prp projects.

Ryan Hawk, Outside Agitator (All Artists Are Bastards), 2023

Sweet Pass Sculpture Park is presenting a long leash. This is an innovative installation by Houston-based artist Ryan Hawk. Hawk’s creations, ranging from realistic figurative sculptures to collaged found footage, demonstrate his prowess over diverse mediums. Utilizing recycled architectural glass and artist-manufactured bricks, a long leash sprawls over the park, challenging the boundaries of conventional art.

Hawk’s installation is not just a feast for the eyes; it’s a profound commentary on contemporary art and its socio-political underpinnings. Through a long leash, he critically examines the American cultural hegemony’s impact on Modernism and juxtaposes it with 21st-century socio-political movements. It is an invitation for viewers to question and contemplate the many influences sculpting today’s art landscape.

With its rich tapestry of art installations, galleries, murals, and interactive sessions, West Dallas is poised to showcase its stature as a major artistic hub.
