Opening July 13, Amphibian Stage Productions, will present Fernanda Coppel’s King Liz, a play about the making and breaking of basketball superstars and the power brokers behind them that make it happen. The show will run through Sunday, August 5 with performances on Thursdays through Saturdays at 8:00 p.m., and Sundays at 2:00 p.m.
In the play, sports agent Liz Rico is at the top of the game, but she is fighting to hold her spot in a male-dominated industry. She takes on high school basketball standout Freddie Luna who has a troubled past in the ultimate bet: Will he be the biggest win of her career or will she lose it all?
Artistic Director Kathleen Culebro says of the play, “The moment I read this script I knew I had to produce it. Liz Rico is a powerful woman who has had to overcome so much to gain her place in the world of sports. She sees through people but isn’t understood by those closest to her. She has learned to talk tough in order to survive, but cares deeply about her clients, and particularly about Freddie Luna and the world that is about to open up for him. Nobody knows better than she does that it’s lonely at the top, and very dangerous.”
Starring as Liz Rico, Kenneisha Thompson is a familiar face onstage in theatres across North Texas. She appears in films with Rooney Mara, Casey Affleck, Robert Redford and Danny Glover. King Liz marks her main-stage debut at Amphibian. She was last seen in Amphibian’s staged reading of The Pleasure Trials.
Thompson’s career began as a radio personality for Hampton University’s WHOV 88.1 FM. After earning a BA in Journalism & Communications, she continued as a gospel DJ for Dallas’s Heaven 97 KHVN. Her previous stage credits include: Two Trains Running (African American Rep. Theater – AART), Company (Jubilee Theatre), The Firestorm (Kitchen Dog Theater), Bright Half Life (WaterTower Theatre), and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (Jubilee Theatre), where she earned BroadwayWorld.com’s 2014 Best Supporting Actress Award for her role as Dussie Mae. Thompson stars as Velena Williams in the upcoming Indie film Cowyboy & Indiana, appears in the breakout Indie feature A Ghost Story – opposite Rooney Mara and Casey Affleck, and featured in the 2018 release The Old Man and The Gun starring Robert Redford and Danny Glover. Kenneisha has been the National Spokesperson for Long John Silver’s and voiced several video games, including Lady Hammerlock in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel and Reyna in Battleborn.
In addition to his many stage and commercial appearances, Telvin Griffin will soon be seen in the film Into the Ashes, starring Frank Grillo and Luke Grimes. The cast also includes Olivia de Guzman, Sammy Ray Henderson, Bob Hess, Krista Scott, and. It is directed by William (Bill) Earl Ray. King Liz received its world premiere at Second Stage Theatre in an acclaimed, extended run in the summer of 2015. King Liz was sold to Showtime and is being developed into a half hour comedy-drama.
