In mid-March, the Kimbell Art Museum invites families and art lovers of all ages to a free week-long celebration of creativity, storytelling, movement, and more. From Monday, March 15, to Friday, March 19, the virtual Spring Break Art Extravaganza offers imaginative fun for curious spring breakers to enjoy from home.
The museum is partnering with locally and nationally recognized artists and organizations to prepare a lineup of exciting activities and performances inspired by their permanent collection. Each day will feature art-making guides, live family programming, and engaging videos created by guest artists. Reservations are only required for selected art-making sessions. Facebook Live story times are presented in both English and Spanish. Sign up to receive free art kits while supplies last. Visit kimbellart.org/springbreak for more details.
Monday, March 15: Artful Animals
Paws, tails, wings, and spots—the week kicks off focusing on favorites from the animal kingdom. Warm up with sketching; follow a step-by-step video about painting fantastic creatures; and gather around for a special story time starring one very loyal dog, and more.
Tuesday, March 16: All About Lines!
Get inspired by the many wondrous possibilities of lines. Sign up for a two-hour needleworking class with Dallas-based artists from Oil and Cotton. Watch how artist Jared Chapman combines shapes to create wacky characters, and don’t miss a delightful Facebook Live story time.
Wednesday, March 17: Faces
Nose around and focus those eyes—this day is all about faces. Guest artist Nick Parker shares his tips for drawing faces; actor Kent Williams introduces kids to Kabuki theater; and an ancient sculpture from Nigeria inspires some art-making ideas.
Thursday, March 18: Finders-Makers
Calling all adventurers for a day of fresh discoveries. Experience the storytelling magic of stilt-dancing performed by Amphibian Stage Tad-Poles; embark on a texture scavenger hunt; and sign up to model clay with Dallas-based artists from Oil and Cotton.
Friday, March 19: Families
The last day of the extravaganza celebrates families of all kinds. Monkey around with some playful primates. From a Japanese landscape painting, discover the work of New York-based artist-illustrator Xindi Yan, and practice the art of Tai Chi with a loved one. Youth education programs are supported by the Lowe Foundation Endowment for Kimbell Kids and a grant from the Heart of Neiman Marcus Foundation.
