Ninety-four years ago, Martin Luther King Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia. MLK Day, celebrated on the third Monday of January, honors his birth, and gives the world the opportunity to take stock in the world we’ve created. Often, that means reflecting on history to see how far we’ve come, and what steps to take to improve.
As a repository of human rights history, the Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum will celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day with free admission, film screenings, and gallery talks. In accordance with its mission to teach the history of the Holocaust and advance human rights to combat prejudice, hatred, and indifference, free admission on MLK Day removes financial barriers to its collection of empathy and information.
In commemoration of Dr. King’s work, the museum will offer screenings of the films Selma and Rising: The Hall of Negro Life in the Cinemark Theater and present gallery talks about the civil rights movement in English and in Spanish.
Visitors are encouraged to reserve tickets online in advance, here. Walk-ins will be accommodated based on availability. Gallery talks will be on a first-come, first-served basis; please make a reservation at the guest services desk upon arrival on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The free admission day runs from 10 A.M.–5 P.M.
Selma showtimes at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. The Oscar award-winning movie Selma (2014) is a chronicle of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s campaign to secure equal voting rights via an epic march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, in 1965. The movie runs 128 minutes.
Rising: The Hall of Negro Life showtimes at 10:15 A.M. and 1:30 P.M. Rising: The Hall of Negro Life (2022) tells the story of the creation of the Hall of Negro Life at the 1936 Texas Centennial at Fair Park, a pivotal space where African Americans defined their own image in a public arena. The short film run time is 25 minutes.
