THRICE AS NICE: CRAIGHEAD GREEN GALLERY KICKS OFF 2016 WITH A TRIO OF ARTISTS

Abhidnya Ghugem, or ?Abhi,? will be presenting her second body of work at Craighead Green this month. Titled Relevance the show will feature the artist?s new henna paintings and?wall sculpture. Informed by a combination of woodblock printing, painting and sculpting skills, she is influenced by the rich tradition of contrasting colors and textures in India. Ghugem?s sculptural pieces begin with woodblock prints on paper plates. The paper is deckled and then rolled and sculpted into beautiful wall hangings and site-responsive installations. Abhi uses Indian henna designs as her inspiration to create a sensory and spatial experience for the viewer.

Relatively new to the art scene?in Dallas, Bryson Davis Jones, will be presenting his abstract paintings titled Arbitrary Chemistry. Jones?s earlier paintings were based on orthogonal shapes related to architectural solids and voids. Organic overlapping shapes, forms, and visual textures imbue his new work creating a modern quality. Jones describes his work as “mostly organic with a pop of sensibility. I like to?a play off the known?organic forms and recognized geometric?shapes to create tension.”?Jones says his paintings are “off,? and they are not perfect in?the sense of an organized place. The disorganization and imperfect shapes are unexpected and cause the viewer to spend more time studying the paintings. Jones comments that, “For some reason, art ties us into this life together and connects?us through form, color and expression.?

Kenda North, a renowned Dallas-based artist and educator, continues her career with a new body of underwater photography titled Flora Aquatilis. Known for her submerged images, North?continues with the same idea, but now sans the figurative aspect of the former images. North says of this series,?”These images are inspired by floral still life paintings.? The French term for still life is ?nature morte? (dead nature) which has a rather sad inference, yet?my bouquets are indeed dying.?The flowers had been made into elaborate arrangements, carefully placed to provide a splash of color at an event and then returned to the florist who created them.?I rescued them for one last hurrah, suspended in a pool and bathed in summer sunlight.” North?s photographs have an abstract sensibility to them. Harnessing shadows and sunlight, North has?successfully?captured the last of what is left of the short life of?each arrangement.
